Finalist Spotlight: Annie Kenyon Developments
Sister company to Annie Kenyon Architects, Annie Kenyon Developments designs stunning properties for a “range of budgets and visions”. We spoke to the woman at the centre of the action about how it feels to be shortlisted twice at this year’s Trades Awards.
Hi Annie. Congratulations on your double nomination! How would it feel to win Home/Building Improvement – Exterior, Best New Business, or both?
“It would mean the world to me – after years of establishing a reputation for quality design and services, it would be the icing on the cake for not only Duncan and I, but the whole team at ak|d , the consultants and contractors. We have created a great team and with lots of very exciting sites coming on to our portfolio we are looking forward to delivering many more homes in the future.”
What first drew you to a career in architecture?
“I have always had an interest in architecture and I was lucky to visit many interesting buildings when I was younger. It gave me a real passion for the history and vernacular buildings. I am very fortunate that I love what I do as a profession and now being able to deliver completed homes, with a great team of contractors and suppliers, as well as practicing architecture, is my dream job!”
What was it that inspired you to set up Annie Kenyon Developments?
“I realised that there was a gap in the market to offer the public the opportunity to purchase fully complete new Architect design led homes. After many years of helping private clients through the self-build route, we knew how much time, effort and emotion it takes to build your own home, so we wanted to take the hassle away and offer a turnkey solution.
“As we build to order the clients still get the opportunity to personalize their homes, by meeting our designers at Laing’s and designing their own kitchens and bathrooms, or choosing the colours of windows, or internal specifications. We also fund the build so clients don’t have to get their own self build mortgage- but just a normal mortgage product which is a lot more cost effective. It’s a fantastic service we deliver and all our clients have enjoyed the experience and most importantly love their new homes.”
And when you take on a new project, what drives and inspires your designs?
“Aberdeenshire is such a beautiful location and you just have to look around you – the old walls, the vernacular steadings and forms, and how they sit in the landscape. It is so important to respect the context and culture so I always take my inspiration from the setting. It’s great fun being creative with new materials and forms and providing energy efficient, colourful designs which give our clients bright open airy homes to live in. We are very proud of our designs.”
