Finalist Spotlight: W M Donald
Health and safety is a key consideration for W M Donald on any site or project they are working on. With their company-wide commitment to HSE, this is being recognised at this year’s Trades Awards as they are nominated in the Excellence in Health & Safety category. Fraser Morrison, HSEQ Advisor, tells us about the company’s culture and how it would feel to win.
Congratulations on being shortlisted! How would it feel to take home the award?
“Winning the award would be recognition of the WHOLE company, recognition of every employee and every sub-contractor that has come on the journey of continually improving health and safety within W M Donald. We are constantly learning and self-improving, through our pro-active approach to health and safety, to make W M Donald an industry leader in health and safety. Winning this award would cement the hard work and dedication of the work force as well as recognise that standards are improving within the Construction industry with regards health and safety and rivaling that of oil and gas companies, which everyone views as industry leaders. Our employees are faced with high-risk situations on a daily basis which are controlled, managed and allow safe working to take place.”
How does W M Donald promote a culture of health & safety across such a large business?
“From the board room to the site, everyone at W M Donald plays an important role in shaping the health and safety culture of the company. Senior Managers carry out periodic health and safety updates across all our live sites. Our site staff undergo training in various health and safety courses and are supplied with the best PPE and equipment to perform their roles. In the last 2 years, we have introduced an HSE Advisor who will monitor site work to ensure safe working practices are being followed, but also to be a point of contact for any health and safety questions or queries allowing self-regulation of our work activities. W M Donald has also recently been awarded with the new ISO 45001 health and safety accreditation meaning processes and procedures are robust and we have shown we self-manage them to ensure they are fit for purpose while complying with legislation and legal requirements.”
How will the business continue to improve?
“At WM Donald, we don’t sit on our laurels and are always striving to improve year or year with regards to our health and safety practices and performance. Last year, we won a silver RoSPA award for excellence in health and safety which was an evidence-based assessment. This year we are aiming to achieve a gold award. As we look to self-improve, we collate health and safety performance data and use it to help us look at areas where we can improve whether that be further training for our employees or implementing new processes to ensure we are working safer. ‘You are only ever as good as your last job’ is a saying that is used often within the industry which is true, but looking to the future W M Donald set targets we look to achieve which involves everyone in the company playing a role. Continuous improvement plays a key role at W M Donald in shaping our future health and safety culture and performance.”
